Tom McNeely: Men's Water Polo
Artist: Tom McNeely
The quiet calmness of the surface of a swimming pool is suddenly broken with violent splashes and raging surges of water as an exciting game of Water Polo begins. Swimming back and forth across a marked off section of a pool, two teams ... each consisting of a goalie and six field players ... vie for the highest score in the game. Each team is distinguished by colored bonnet-like hats they wear. While racing across the pool, each team tries to throw a soccer-size ball past the opposing team's goalie and into the goal. Players move the ball by passing it or swimming with it. However, when holding the ball, the field players must handle it with only one hand. The goalie, on the other hand, may use both hands. Each time a team takes control of the ball, it must attempt a goal within thirty-five seconds, or it loses the ball to the opposing team. Thus, to be successful in this fast-paced water sport, each team must develop its own ingenious strategies ... and then players must work closely together to implement their strategies to outmaneuver their opponents. Water polo is just one of many events of the Summer Olympic Games.
