Faith Jaques: Children of Bulgaria Although the European nation of Bulgaria is small in size, the country's landscape exhibits striking diversity. Lying on Bulgaria's northern border is one of Europe's most romantic rivers ... the Danube. This beautiful blue river twists and turns like a serpent as it flows along the Bulgarian border on its journey to the Black Sea. The large, open Danubian Plain rises from the edge of the Danube and slowly rolls to the foot of the Balkan Mountains. The nation's most fertile soil is found in these plains. Here, grains thrive like wheat and maize -- as well as crops of sunflowers, sugar beets and tobacco. The Balkan mountains rise high above this fertile plain and appear to be a barrier, splitting the country in half. However, in reality these mountains possess numerous passes and valleys. These mountains add not only beauty, but also rich natural resources to Bulgaria ... for they foster thick timber and lush pasture lands, and also rich mineral wealth, including deposits of copper, lead and zinc. Situated on the southern side of the Balkan Mountains is the famous Valley of Roses -- the center of Bulgaria's rose oil industry. Just across the wide, neighboring Maritsa Basin are the majestic Rhodope Mountains, which feature deep, forbidding gorges and high, scenic waterfalls. The eastern end of Bulgaria is bordered by the Black Sea, where beautiful beaches draw tourists from all over Europe and epitomize the beauty of this picturesque country.
