The romantic Rhine River flows along the western border of Liechtenstein. Sometimes it is shallow, or even dry; sometimes it is a strong current foaming down from alpine glaciers. A narrow strip of rich farmland lies next to the river, and to the east and south, snow-capped mountains, covered with magnificent pine forest, rise from the flat plain. This is Liechtenstein, a tiny country comprising only sixty-two square miles, that can be seen in its entirety from the surrounding mountains. The boy and girl in this artwork are typical Liechtenstein children. Accustomed to the mountainous terrain, they run surefootedly down the steep mountainside, stopping occasionally to pick a bouquet of the prolific wildflowers and being careful not to trip on the loose stones. In this miniature country nestled peacefully between Austria and Switzerland, the children live quiet, simple lives in small villages. They enjoy tending the cattle herds along well-worn paths in the steep mountainsides. From the mountains where the cattle graze, the children can see the Castle of Vaduz standing regally among the towering slopes. This is both Liechtenstein's national museum and the home of the reigning monarch. Erected in 1711 and restored in 1907, the castle now contains a rare art collection, compiled through the years by the royal family. This national treasure is shared with the rest of the world each time Liechtenstein reproduces one of these beautiful paintings on the country's postage stamps.

This artwork was originally published on the Fleetwood® First Day of Issue Cover for the International Year of the Child stamp issued in 1979 by countries all around the world.
