Just as the Emerald Isle is known for her grassy knolls and rolling pastures, the Irish people are famous for their warm-hearted hospitality, friendliness, and strong family ties. It is a common sight in Ireland to see a father and his young sons working together, gathering peat from the bogs that comprise about a sixth of Ireland's land area. They enjoy each other's company and the work goes rapidly. Since Ireland's coal and oil reserves are scarce, the peat they dig is sold to neighbors and is used to heat their own home as well. Once the peat is dug, the father and sons haul it to town where they deliver it to their customers' doors. When they finally arrive home, the mother and duaghters have prepared a traditional Irish supper consisting of chicken, lamb, sausage, or steak, and of course, potatoes. For hundreds of years, the potato has been a mainstay to the Irish family. It grows well in Ireland and is used in a variety of dishes. After supper, the children eagerly await the songs the family will sing and and the stories their father will tell them before bedtime. Their songs are part of a continuing Irish folk tradition as old as Ireland itself. Theirs is a grand musical heritage including songs of love, sorrow, and devotion to their homeland. Once the family's favorite songs have been sung, and the children are tucked in bed, father tells them the stories they love the best, those of leprechauns and hidden gold treasures. Indeed there are no storytellers like the Irish.
