Tom McNeely: Lester Bowles (Mike) Pearson - Prime Minister Lester Bowles Pearson was born in Newtonbrook, near Toronto. He served in World War I, then continued his education at Oxford University. In 1928 he joined the Canadian Department of External Affairs. Later he became Canada's first ambassador to Washington, D.C. In 1948 he was elected to Parliament as a Liberal. Pearson was also the president of The Seventh UN General Assembly. In 1957 Pearson was awarded the Nobel Peace Price for his greatest diplomatic achievement of defusing a probable crisis by proposing to send peacekeeping forces to the Suez Canal. He was skilled as a negociator and mediator which was used to greatly benefit Canada during the second World War. In 1973 Pearson became the fourteenth Prime Minister of Canada when the Liberal party won the election. It was during his term that the Canadian Flag was adopted as well as the introduction of bilingualism and bicultralism in Canada.
