Perhaps Henry Clay best summarized his role in the Congress when he said: "I know no North -- no South -- no East -- no West." Indeed, his political career was almost entirely devoted to finding compromises between the North and the South over the volatile issue of slavery. Clay's great personal charm, melodic speaking voice, and intense devotion to principle earned him the trust of both North and South during Congressional debates. On many occasions, Clay's adroit political skill was the only thing that held the Union together. At stake during the first compromise that he engineered in 1820 was whether Missouri should be allowed to enter the Union as a slave state. Clay helped maintain the nation's delicate balance by convincing Congress to allow Missouri to enter as a slave state while Maine would enter as a free state. Thirty years later, Clay safely led Congress through another potential crisis when he convinced that body to adopt a series of measures known as the Great Compromise of 1850. This agreement, which included the return of fugitive slaves, and the admission of California as a free state, is credited with delaying the Civil War for almost ten years. Only two years after its adoption, Clay died while in the nation's capital.
