Basil Smith: Tissandier Brothers Dirigible Long ago when man set out to explore the thrills and excitement of soaring into the "wild blue yonder," it was usually in simple -- and often dangerous -- hot air balloons. Early balloons possessed some very serious navigational problems -- they were nearly always at the mercy of the wind and they had very little horizontal directional guidance. To improve upon the maneuverability of balloons in flight, the first dirigibles were designed. These new, sausage-shaped balloons were much more steamlined and sported both directional rudders and an engine-driven propeller for horizontal movement. These six mint stamps from Liberia were issued March 9, 1978 in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Zeppelin.
