Liz Butler: Blenheim Palace / 18th Century Garden Blenheim Palace, one of the most famous private homes in the world, was the gift of a grateful Queen Anne to John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough for his resounding victory over the French king. In addition to giving the Duke the property, she also offered at the same time to build there at her expense a new house worthy of Britain's great hero. To build his house, the Duke chose the Controller of the Queen's Works, architect Vanbrugh. Zestfully, Vanbrugh set out to create a grandiose showpiece for the Duke, complete with elaborate stonework, detailed gardens ... and a large bridge that contained thirty-three rooms fit for habitation. However, before the home was complete, the Duke fell into disfavor with the Queen and it was not until the ascension of George I that the magnificent palace was finished. Sixty years after the development of the park by Vanbrugh, the great English gardener Capability Brown transformed the gardens of Blenheim into a natural paradise. He created an artificial lake and widened the Glyme River so that it would flow more impressively through the park. Then, he planted grass and trees throughout the estate. In the years since Capability Brown refashioned the gardens of Blenheim, the park has undergone further changes. For example, a spring garden has been added which includes winding paths, high planted beds of shrubs and small trees, and vistas of brightly-colored flowers. For many years Blenheim, the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill, has been open to visitors.
