Mark Schuler: Francis H. Pierpont During the Civil War -- when passions ruled and tempers flared -- Francis Harrison Pierpont offered an alternative to those who lived in Virginia but sought to remain loyal to the Union. To this end, he helped create West Virginia and helped govern his state through its most troubled times. Born in western Virginia, now part of West Virginia, Pierpont graduated from Alleghany College and was admitted to the bar in 1841. From 1844 on, he took an active interest in politics, serving as a presidential elector on the Taylor ticket in 1848. Strongly supporting the anti-slavery movement and loyal to the Union, Pierpont favored Lincoln in the 1860 election. And, when Virginia seceded from the Union, he assumed perhaps his greatest role. When all was confusion, Pierpont stepped in, organizing a convention of Unionists. Contending that the secessionist officials had vacated their offices, those attending the convention elected Pierpont provisional governor of Virginia. Adoption of legislature, constitution and new state representatives quickly followed. In 1863, the new state of West Virginia was admitted to the Union and a new governor was elected. Pierpont took over as governor of the "restored" state of Virginia (those counties won back by the Union troops). After the War, he became governor of Virginia. In 1868, Pierpont returned to his law practice in West Virginia.
