Howard Koslow: George B. McClellan George B. McClellan is one of few military heroes who was eventually removed from command in a flurry of controversy. History recounts him as an outstanding general whose skill in organizing troops and raising morale was exemplary. It faults him, however, for hesitation in battle and speculates that perhaps southern sympathies kept him from the aggression which would have left his military career untarnished. At any rate, George B. McClellan was an important Union leader through most of the Civil War, leading his men to victory on many fronts. McClellan graduated from West Point at the age of 20 -- second in his class. He served in the Mexican War and later taught at West Point. Thinking his military life over, McClellan resigned in 1857, taking up a career with the railroad. But with the Civil War came the call to duty. As Commander of the Army of the Potomac, he organized a disheveled, discouraged group of men defeated at Bull Run -- into a strong, disciplined, fighting force and gained valuable victories for the North. But as general-in-chief of the Union Army, he delayed attacks and made such strategic errors as over-estimating the size of the enemy army and calling for more men than needed. He did successfully halt Lee's first invasion at Antietam, but his failure to pursue and attack caused President Lincoln to remove him from command. In 1864, McClellan unsuccessfully opposed Lincoln as the Democratic candidate for President.
