Howard Koslow: Winifield S. Hancock Perhaps his name and West Point training were the things that drove Winfield Scott Hancock into military bravado. Perhaps not. But whatever his motives, he became an inspiration to men and a symbol of perseverance in battle. Hancock was born in Pennsylvania and graduated from West Point in 1844. Ironically, during the Mexican War, he served under General Winfield Scott, for whom he was named. There, he saw action and first proved himself in battle. Exceptionally brave and seemingly fearless, Hancock was a captain by the time the Civil War began. He fought on the Union side and was soon commissioned brigadier general. In the battles that lay ahead -- South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg -- he remained stalwart in his appraoch and steadfast in bloody battle. At Gettysburg, as his gallant silhouette appeared on Cemetery Ridge, it was said that terrified men who had begun to flee stopped and troops in chaos were restored to order. And, despite his own serious injury, Hancock stayed with his men on the battlefield until victory was won. Other battles followed and Hancock continued his proud service. In 1866, he was rewarded with a promotion to major general. Later, he unsuccessfully ran for the presidency against James A. Garfield. After his defeat in the election, Hancock returned to his Army career and died as he had lived -- a soldier -- having served his country boldly for more than 40 years.
