Howard Koslow: Philip Sheridan
Sheridan graduated from West Point in 1853 and accepted a commission into the Army infantry. His first assignments brought him to the borders of America's yet unbroken frontier and Sheridan rose to the rank of captain having engaged boldly in action against the Indians. When Civil War broke out, he was a staff officer, but soon extraordinary leadership qualities began to surface and Sheridan was placed in command. He fought bravely at Chickamauga and in the Battle of Chattanooga, his men successfully broke the Confederate line at Missionary Ridge. General Ulysses S. Grant took note and Sheridan was given command of the 12,000-man cavalry of the Army of the Potomac. His reorganization plan was brilliant and Sheridan soon found himself commander of all Union forces in the Shenandoah Valley. "Sheridan's Scouts" -- Union troops in Confederate uniforms -- began the job of destroying Southern partisanship. Then a surprise attack at Cedar Creek by Confederate General Jubal Early immortalized Sheridan and his men. The stirring poem, Sheridan's Ride, by Thomas B. Read, described the daring counterattack which shattered the Confederate troops. In 1865, Sheridan was at Five Forks to break Lee's defense at Petersburg and then at Appomattox to block his retreat, forcing Lee's final surrender. For his actions, Sheridan received the thanks of Congress. Later, he led campaigns against the Indians and eventually succeeded General William Sherman as army commander.
