Often called the "Master of Suspense," Alfred Hitchcock directed more than fifty feature length films. He was born in England on August 13, 1899 and studied at St. Ignatius College in London. In 1920, Hitchcock joined the English branch of the American motion picture company, Famous Players-Lasy. He designed and wrote titles for several silent films before becoming a director in 1925 with the film The Pleasant Garden. His first success came in 1926 with The Lodger, a movie based on the Jack the Ripper murders. This was quickly followed by another hit, Blackmail, which in 1929 was Britain's first sound film. Movies like The 39 Steps and The Lady Vanishes -- both rich in international intrigue -- caught the attention of Hollywood movie magnates. Thus in 1939, Alfred Hitchcock moved to the United States where he quickly became one of Hollywood's leading directors. Among his unforgettable pictures are Suspicion, Spellbound, Notorious, Strangers on a Train, North by Northwest and the horror classic, Psycho. In 1955, Alfred Hitchcock became a U.S citizen. Hitchcock also directed a series of suspense programs throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Rarely has a director's unique personality and view of the world reflected so vividly on the movies and programs he produced as the great Alfred Hitchcock. Indeed, an amazing sense of suspense and a keen awareness of audience reaction mark him as a genius of the movie industry.
