Perhaps far more than any of his other admirable characteristics, David Niven's easy, debonair manner won him movie stardom ... especially in light comedies. The actor was born James David Graham Niven on March 1, 1910 in Kirremuir, Scotland. After attending the Royal Military College, he served his country in the Highland Light Infantry. And, when Britain went to war against Hitler, he rejoined the British Army. Between 1932 and 1935, Mr. Niven worked as an extra and player of bit parts in Hollywood. To support himself during the lean times, he worked numerous odd jobs, including as laundry deliveryman and liquor salesman. In 1939, David Niven finally landed the important roles he needed to properly launch his career, including parts in Bachelor Mother and Wuthering Heights. His first starring role came in the picture Raffles, produced in 1939. After 1939, Mr. Niven divided his career between Britain and the United States. Among his most memorable later roles was Phileas Fogg in the 1956 classic Around the World in Eighty Days. However, few of David Niven's fans will ever forget his performance as an aging child molester in the 1958 film Separate Tables. It was for this role that he won an Academy Award. In addition, David Niven was an author who wrote several books including his autobiography, The Moon's a Balloon, published in 1972.

This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood® First Day Cover of the Great Britain 22P David Niven stamp issued October 8, 1985.
