Tom Bjarnason: Charlie Chaplin During the silent film era, Charlie Chaplin was often called "the funniest man in the world." One of the most versatile actors of the movie industry, he wrote and directed nearly all his own films and composed the musical scores for all his sound pictures. Charles Spencer Chaplin was born into a poor London family in 1889. Perhaps it was his impoverished youth that helped him so ingeniously develop his most well-known and beloved character, "the Tramp" or "Little Fellow." But, in any case, it was with the appearance of this character in 1914 that Chaplin became a star. Looking undernourished and undersized, the Tramp wore a battered derby and walked in a shuffling manner. But, despite his bedraggled appearance, the Tramp always wore gloves and carried a cane, reflecting his ability to bounce back from life's most crushing defeats. By 1918, Chaplin was so successful that he formed his own film company and made fewer pictures which were longer and more serious. Although he continued to pursue comedy, he also attempted to make a statement about the condition of the world. His films during this era include The Kid (1920), The Gold Rush (1925), and Modern Times (1936). Although he never became a U.S. citizen, Chaplin lived in the United States for more than forty years. In 1972, he received an honorary Academy Award and was hailed "for the incalculable effect he has had in making motion pictures the art form of this century."
