Tom Bjarnason: Peter Sellers Talents in comedy and vocal mimicry earned Peter Sellers fame as one of the world's finest actors. Born on September 8, 1925, in Southsea, Hampshire, Great Britain, Peter Sellers naturally became interested in the stage, for his family had long been active in show business. Following attendance at St. Aloysius College, Sellers served in the Royal Air Force from 1943 through 1946. Shortly thereafter, he began doing comic impersonations in London vaudeville houses. But, what earned him fame throughout Britain was his zany radio series entitled The Goon Show, which aired from 1949 through 1959. Later, this funny show, which Sellers helped originate, became the basis for several television series. In 1957, he made his stage debut in the farce Brouhaha. He also appeared in several motion pictures, including Orders Are Orders, The Ladykillers and The Naked Truth which was released in the United States as Your Past is Showing!. In 1959, this gifted British actor first made a lasting impression on American film audiences in The Mouse That Roared. In this film he played three different roles: the duchess, the prime minister and the constable. That same year, he won the coveted British Film Academy Award for his performance in I'm All Right, Jack. Among the other movies in which Sellers gave memorable performances are Lolita (1962), Dr. Strangelove (1964) and The Pink Panther (1964) in which he played a bumbling French detective.
