Michael Warren: Killdeer Scientifically named vociferus after its noisy repertoire of notes and calls, the Killdeer is the most common plover in North America. Although a true shorebird, the Killdeer can be found nesting miles away from the nearest water source. These shy birds are commonly found in the meadows and fields of the prairies. The gray-brown double-collared Killdeers favor open locations with an extended view for nesting. In shallow hollows, both male and females help build loose nests with a few small stones, wood chips or weed stalks. Each mating pair of Killdeer guards the four buff-colored, black-blotched eggs. Ever alert, the Killdeer may fly frantically in circles and issue its warning cry of killl-dee-ee from which it takes it common name. If the warning does not work, the Killdeer, like most plovers, ingeniously feigns a wing injury, attempting to lead the intruder away from the nest. Early sportsmen almost wiped out this species in some areas, but today, farmers and conservationists hail the Killdeer which feeds on many crop-destroying insect pests. Banding together in loose flocks as winter approaches, the Killdeer migrates to the warmer marshland mudflats and coastal areas of the South and West. The Killdeer is also known as the pasturebird or field plover. This artwork was originally published on a Fleetwood® First Day Cover for the Birds of America Collection.
