When buying food, the British often go to specialty shops like the butcher's, the baker's and the greengrocer's. The wares of the greengrocer's shop are a familiar sight in England. The grocer's juicy fruits and delectable vegetables serenade the senses in an operetta of hues, textures and aromas. Before World War II, these garden fresh delights were shown off in tidy shops against backdrops of colorful tiles depicting scenes of field and farm. Today, the tiles are disappearing, but the shops themselves are still popular. The greengrocer is patronized by many an Englishman shopping daily for his dinner, as refrigerators are small in many English homes and absent altogether in others. The domestically-grown wares of the English greengrocer include potatoes, tomatoes, lettuce, apples, pears and other fruits and vegetables. Much of England's horticultural farming is done in the middle and southern parts of the country, in regions such as the Fens, West Midlands, and East Anglia, where the weather is warmer and subject to milder climatic changes than in the northern countryside. Potatoes, the country's most important vegetable crop, are grown most everywhere there is soil to plant them. Sugar beets, another important crop nationally, are used as a rotation crop and supply nearly a third of the country's sugar. Beans, kale, stone fruits and soft fruits are also among the crops grown in England which find their way to the greengrocer's shelves to be purchased and taken home to grace the supper table.
