Located in the picturesque city of Roskilde, Denmark ... the nation's capital in days of old ... is a beautifully ornate cathedral that was designed in a lavish combination of the Romanesque and Gothic style of the twelfth century. This glorious cathedral is the burial place of twenty Danish Kings and seventeen Queens, and much of the interior's decorative work is devoted to monuments to their memory. One of the most important monuments in the Roskilde Cathedral is the black marble tomb of Queen Margrethe. She was married at the tender age of ten to King Haakon VI of Norway. Through a series of events, she later became the supreme ruler of Norway, Sweden and Denmark. She ruled with compassion and justice ... and was beloved throughout her vast kingdom. At her death in 1412, her subjects prepared a royal tomb as a lasting memorial to their Queen. The elaborate sarcophagus of the tomb is believed to be in the likeness of the great queen herself. She is represented as a young woman, even though she died at the age of fifty-nine. The craftsmanship that went into making this spectacular monument is just one work of human genius of which the people of Denmark are justifiably proud.
