Michael Warren: Sanderlings This shore bird is quite a traveler. It generally breeds above the Arctic Circle but disperses quickly after mating season to summer in warm climates. A proficient flier, the Sanderling is a long-distance migrant and often ventures into the southern hemisphere, roaming as far as South America and Australia. Small numbers of the species also find their way to the islands in the South Pacific where they dart along beaches and poke their beaks into the wet sands, searching for food.
