Jeffery Matthews: Queen's 60th Birthday, Shamrock and Flax When Queen Elizabeth II took the throne, her private existence as a young mother with two children came to an end. Prince Charles was only three years old when he witnessed his mother's coronation from the royal box in Westminster Abbey. And, like his mother before him, he had to endure lengthy separations from his parents as they toured the world as ambassadors of Great Britain and The Throne. Certainly prior to her ascension, Elizabeth had regularly represented her father King George VI on world tours, but she herself assumed primary responsibility for this duty upon her ascension. And, less than two years after she ascended The Throne, The Queen and Prince Philip left Heathrow Airport for their first Commonwealth tour which took them around the world. In the tradition established by their parents long ago, Prince Charles and Princess Anne are frequent ambassadors for Great Britain and travel regularly spreading goodwill on behalf of their homeland and The Queen. Members of the Royal Family -- as well as citizens of Commonwealth countries around the world -- celebrated The Queen's sixtieth birthday on April 21, 1986. This original work of art features the Shamrock and Flax of Northern Ireland, one of the countries which make up the United Kingdom. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood® First Day Cover for the Great Britain 17p Her Majesty the Queen Sixthieth Birthday stamp issued April 21, 1986.
