Spain has been involved in every significant architectural movement and school in the last thousand years: Romanesque structures which lasted until the rise of the Gothic style of architecture in the 12th Century; the magnificent cathedrals and palaces of the Renaissance; the ornateness of the Baroque period; and the present day Art Nouveau architecture. Spain's architectural traditions are indeed rich and varied, and Spanish architecture in the last decades has been renewing constructive ideas and establishing a relationship with urban areas which need regenerating. Modern architectural theories try to combine the functional and the aesthetic with an ambition which leaves behind old molds. This artwork features the surrealistic chimneys and ventilators of the Casa Milá in Barcelona. The monumental sculptures were designed by Antoni Gaudi (1852-1926), one of the many famous artists (including Picasso, Miró, and Dali) to emerge from Catalonia in the 20th Century.
