Erik Nitsche: St. Aengus Roman Catholic Church Because of its beautiful lush green countryside, Ireland is known as the Emerald Isle. The Irish people of this small, independent country are known to be warm-hearted, friendly and artistic. Christianity went straight to the hearts of the Irish. They accepted it enthusiastically back in the 400's A.D., when Saint Pratick brought Christianity to this beautiful and unique island. Monastic Christianity blended easily with other qualities of the Celtic realm: the Irish loved learning and story-telling, and monks brought them the art of writing. Since then, the social life of the Irish has long revolved around their local Roman Catholic Church. Every Irish city has a Catholic Cathedral, and nearly all towns and villages have a Catholic Church. In many areas, the local Catholic priest is the most important person in the community. At their local church, the Irish people join religious societies and take part in social gatherings and other activities. Situated on a beautiful hilltop, six miles from Londonderry, sits the modern Roman Catholic Church featured in this artwork. Designed by architect Liam McCormick, the St. Aengus Roman Catholic Church is located in the city of Burt, Donegal County, Ireland.
