Between World War I and World War II, the trend toward Functionalism in French architecture reflected the influence of Germany's Bauhaus designers. However, France's Functionalism typically took on a uniquely French character, thanks to the work of such architects as Robert Mallet-Stevens. His work focused on the effective utilization of space without the ornamentation of Classicism. Mallet-Stevens' work made use of simple, yet elegant, geometric patterns giving his designs a distinctive neatness and clarity. His style is best seen in his design of a city block in Paris which now bears name. The Rue Mallet-Stevens features shops, hotels, and apartment housing. Mallet-Stevens made use of reinforced concrete forms such as cubes, cylinders and parallel structures to creat a continuity in each structure and, at the same time, give harmony to the entire city block. The Tours de la Défense apartment complex in Paris highlights this mingling of the functional and the romantic in French architecture.
