The intersting and unusual-looking building featured in this artwork was conceived by Rudolf Steiner. The intention for the construction of the Goetheanum was to erect a building solely for the "Study of Humanities." Steiner was not an architect, but rather a philosopher. His opinion was that the basis of all artistic forms of architecture must come out of the spirit of humanism, if it should be the perfect surrounding for this ideology. Rudolf Steiner was an Austrian social philosopher. He was born in Kraljevica (which later became Yugoslavia) on February 27, 1861. He was the founder of anthroposophy, a doctrine explainig life in terms of man's inner nature, spiritual perception and pure thinking independent of senses. Steiner specialized in the sciences. In 1913, he founded his own Anthroposophical Society and established the "Goetheanum." It is a school for liberal arts at Dornach. He also began the Waldorf school movement and other movements and institutes, such as that for handicapped children, for mathematical and scientific research, for medicine and agriculture, and for the cultivation of speech, music, and drama. Just several of Rudolf Steiner's many contributions to his many areas of interest.
