From the numerous classical structures of Rome and Florence to the unorthodox buildings of the twentieth century, Italy's architecture is among the most respected in Europe. The traditions of excellence are maintained to the present day. Italy's most famous and influential architect and designer of the twentieth century was Pier Luigi Nervi (1891-1979). He was one of the world's foremost proponents of the aesthetic potentialities, as opposed to mere structural convenience, of reinforced concrete. His most spectacular designs are domes of radiating concrete ribs designed to enclose great spaces. Examples of this type of structure are two spectacular sports halls built fo rthe 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, the Exhibition Hall in Turin, and the Airplane Hangar in Orbetello which is featured in this artwork. Other examples are the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York City, the Pirelli Skyscraper in Milan, and the National Center for Industry and Technique in Paris.
