B. Tattersfield: Norman Foster Profile During the 1970s and into the 1980s, British architecture experienced a renaissance and re-appreciation. No modern British architect better exemplified this renaissance movement than Norman Foster. Born in 1936 in Manchester, Norman Foster was educated at the Universities of Manchester and Yale. After forming Foster and Associates, his design for the Willis Faber & Dumas headquarters in Ipswich, England was completed in 1974. This building was his first major work. The structure accomplishes its main task: the creation of an attractive working environment. It achieves this by combining an exceptional attention to detail and finish. The building is curved, and its exterior is a skin of black glass. This glass surface creates the effect of an almost seamless mirror, reflecting the older buildings surrounding it.
