B. Tattersfield: Denys Lasdun Profile Although modern British architects have created some original and individual buildings, it is their work on public building such as housing developments, schools and banks which earned them a high reputation in the latter half of the twentieth century. Indeed British architecture after 1945 had no dominating figure such as America's Frank Lloyd Wright, Finland's Alvar Aalto, or France's Le Corbusier. Yet certain British architects did achieve worldwide recognition for their work. One architect who qualifies for such deserved recognition is Sir Denys Lasdun and his European Investment Bank. Standing boldly on the flat, windy Kirchberg Plateau, the European Investment Bank is a testament to Lasdun's design talents. Overlooking the city of Luxembourg, the building's general shape is cruciform, or cross-like. It is also made of several layers -- or "strata" as Lasdun describes them -- which cantilever out. Sir Denys Lasdun was born in London in 1914. He was educated at the famous Architectural Association in London. Perhaps his most famous architectural design was the National Theatre in London. That building was completed in 1976. This artwork originally appeared on the Fleetwood® First Day Cover for the Great Britain 34p Architecture stamp issued May 12, 1987.
