David K. Stone: Thomas Jonathan Jackson
Thomas Jackson was born in Virginia and attended West Point Academy. Ironically, while there, he shared classrooms with his future colleague, A.P. Hill, and his later opponent, George McClellan. Jackson fought in the Mexican War, attaining the rank of Captain. In 1851 he was appointed Professor of Artillery at the Virginia Military Institute. Deeply religious, he soon persuaded himself that God guided his destiny -- and that of the South. Like General Lee, Jackson was patriotic, but could not take up arms against his State or his people. Thus, he fought at Bull Run on the side of the South. It was during that battle that General Lee, trying to rally his own troops, sighted Jackson, and cried out above the noise of battle, "there stands Jackson like a stone wall." "Stonewall Jackson" became a legend. Appointed Major General, Jackson took command of forces in the Valley of Virginia, inflicting heavy Union losses -- "the most remarkable display of strategic science, rapid marches, and judicious disposition of inferior forces in American history," wrote historian Douglas Freeman. In August '62, he moved to meet Pope's invasion and, with Longstreet, forced Union retreat to the outskirts of Washington. At Antietam, Jackson stood, once again, like a stone wall. Jackson and his troops helped force Union retreats at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. But there, Jackson was struck by a fatal bullet. Thus, the Confederacy lost perhaps its most indomitable fighter: Stonewall Jackson.
