The island of Cyprus is in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, about 60 miles south of Turkey. Since 1974, the northern one-third of Cyprus has been under Turkish control and is known as Kibris, or the Turkish Federated State of Cyprus. Approximately one quarter of the population speak Turkish and live in Kibris, while most of the remainder speak Greek and live in the southern two-thirds of the island in what is still known as Cyprus. Cyprus has figured prominently in the history of Europe, and there have been numerous influences throughout the centuries on her architecture and lifestyle. This artwork features the Hotel Mare Monte in Girne, near the town of Kyrenia, situated on the northern coast of Kibris. The hotel sits picturesquely on a rocky beach amidst oleander bushes, and it is a good example of the influence of modern architecture on the buildings erected recently in many Mediterranean countries. Modern European architects working in areas rich in tradition and history tend to be concerned about the blending of modern and traditional ideas. The Hotel Mare Monte is no exception: the huge dining verandas are overgrown with grape vines, giving the distinct impression of Old World charm and simplicity, while the body of the hotel is a more functional and modern-looking structure. Together, the two parts harmonize perfectly with the surroundings to produce a pleasing tourist location.
