Erik Nitsche: Private House in Lefkosa, Kibris The island of Cyprus is in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, about 60 miles south of Turkey. Since 1974, the northern one-third of Cyprus has been under Turkish control and is known as Kibris, or the Turkish Federated State of Cyprus. Approximately one quarter of the population speak Turkish and live in Kibris, while most of the remainder speak Greek and live in the southern two-thirds of the island in what is still known as Cyprus. Cyprus has figured prominently in the history of Europe, and there have been numerous influences throughout the centuries on her architecture and lifestyle. Modern European architects working in areas rich in tradition and history tend to be concerned about the blending of modern and traditional ideas. This private house in Lefkosa (Nicosia) is no exception to this approach. Architect Necdet Turgay designed the house to take advantage of the traditional shape of Mediterranean houses. He, however, took the concept further by introducing dynamic upward lines to the structure. The result gives the satisfying feeling of a modern building using tradtional architectural styles.
