Erik Nitsche: Elounda Hotel in Greece This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood® First Day Cover for the Greece 1987 Modern Art - Architecture stamp issued May 4, 1987. Classical Greek architecture is among the most famous in the world -- for example, Doris temples, Ionic and Corinthian columns, The Acropolis, and Greek theaters. One of the great achievements of Greek architecture was the concept of the city itself as a work of art; this idea was developed from the original notion of architecture exploring the correct form of the temple. In the twentieth century, Greek architecture relied on a combination of the Classical form and the more modern abstraction of those ideas. Greek art has followed a similar path, as artists and sculptors after World War II began to orient themselves towards the abstract movement which was developing in the West. They found it difficult, however, to discard the romantic, classical traditions. The Hotel featured in this artwork is the Elounda Hotel in Greece. It is a significant modern structure which provides a harmonious combination of the old and new architectural ideas. Artwork Copyright © 1987 Unicover Corporation.
