Erik Nitsche: Centre Des Congrès in Monaco Monaco presents a classic dliemma for modern architects: relatively little space is available for new buildings, and any new building must be integrated with the existing architecture. Although the first problem has been somewhat alleviated by land reclamation projects in all three districts of the principality, land for new projects is precious. So, every square meter must be fully utilized. The second problem challenges architects to be creative in their designs to match the function of the new structures with forms that compliment the old. One structure that solves this dilemma admirably is the Centre des Congrès, which is built on land reclaimed from the Mediterranean and projects outward from the Monaco coast. This unobtrusive structure blends in perfectly with its environment while fulfilling its objective as an office complex. Its low, linear form maximizes its use of space.
