Germany stepped to the front in helicopter development with the Focke Wulf Fw-61. This helicopter has two three-bladed rotor mounted on outriggers and power by a 160 hp radial engine. The Fw-61 had controllable cyclic pitch and set many records . In 1938, Fw-61 made an altitude flight of 11,243 feet and cross-country of 143 miles. This model could reach a 122 km/h speed. This aircraft became the first fully controlled helicopter when it flew in 1937. It was the first helicopter design that had really solved the control problems, and could be flown precisely, even indoors! As the world's first woman helicopter pilot, Hanna Reitsch, demonstrated February 1938 at the Berlin 's Deutchlandhalle Stadium. Germany continued its helicopter development during World War II.
