Michael Warren: Whimbrel These shorebirds have long, decurved bills and distinctly striped heads. They are most often sighted during their fall or spring migration. Whimbrels head north in May, traveling in small flocks that fly in straight lines or the familar V-shaped wedges. They spend the early summer nesting on tundra, and make the return trip south in early July and August. They favor the exposed mud flats, sandbars and beaches of islands and are known for their piercing, clear call.
