Gene Jarvis: Ginger This herbaceous perennial belongs in the ginger family and is native to the eastern tropics of Asia and Africa. Named for the 18th century German botanist Engelbert Kaempfer, this aromatic plant has spirally-arranged blossoms and long, broad leaves. Some species of Kaemferia are believed to have medicinal properties, while others are used as ornamentals and as food flavorings.
