Basil Smith: Sweden -- European Polecat and Field Mouse The wily European Polecat is one of nature's most remarkable hunters. This small carnivore has been known to trap and kill prey much larger than itself and deftly slither through narrow accesses into underground burrows to pursue a meal. In a single year, a family of polecats is capable of eating thousands of mice, rats and rabbits. Before the domestic cat was introduced to Europe, farmers welcomed the polecat's extermination of rodents.
