E. Janota-Bzonwski: Johann Peter Hebel and the Cottage Johann Peter Hebel, a German poet, Evangelist theologian and school man, was born on 10 May 1760 and died 22 September 1826. He wrote the story of "The Clever Pilgram" where a pilgram/beggar stops at a cottage and tricks the proprietor into cooking a meat and vegetable soup rather than the originally discussed "stone soup".
