Anne Oertle: Rapperswil Castle in Switzerland Rapperswil Castle was built by the Count of Rapperswil when he returned from the First Crusade in 1220-1230. Rapperswil Castle (near Zurich Switzerland) is an imposing medieval stronghold on a rocky hill above the town. In 1875, badly in need of restoration, it became the home of Graf Plater, exiled leader of the resistance against the 19th-century occupation of Poland by the Russian tzars. From 1870 to 1927 it housed the Polish National Museum, established by Polish emigrants under the leadership of Count Ladislaus Plater. From Rapperswil, Graf Plater continued to play an active role in Polish politics for another 40 years. Today, the castle contains a museum devoted to mementos of 19th- and 20th-century Polish politics, including portraits of Chopin and Kosciuszko. In 1975 a permanent exhibition devoted to Poland`s contribution to Western civilization went on view on the top floor of the Castle, run by the Friends of the Polish Museum, Rapperswil. Occasionally, the castle shows art exhibits on temporary loan from museums in Warsaw or Crakow. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood® First Day Cover for Germany.
