Erik Nitsche: Heidelberg University The University of Heidelberg was granted establishment permission October 23 in 1385 AD by Pope Urban VI . October 18, 1386 AD the opening ceremony in the Church of the Holy Spirit was held with the first rector being Marsilius von Inghen. Professors were appointed for theology, jurisprudence and philosophy, with medicine in 1388. Currently about 15% of the 27, 000 students enrolled are from outside of Germany.
