Michael Warren: Blue Jay One of the most easily recognized of all birds, the Blue Jay is clad in bright blue feathers and a striking crest. Throughout much of America, Blue Jays lend bright spots of color to a barren snow-laden winter landscape. And, in summer their noisy calls fill woodlands and parks, announcing their presence to man and beast alike. One of the Blue Jay's most outstanding characteristics is its noisiness. Whenever a cat, hawk, or snake comes into view, it shrieks, singly or in chorus. And, just as often, it will create a din just for the pleasure of hearing its own racket. A bane to hunters, the Blue Jay will announce its presence with a raucous shout, warning all animals of potential danger. During nesting season, the normally noisy Blue Jay becomes silent and furtive. A devoted mate, the male feeds his mate in courtship and during the brooding period. Later, he will also bring morsels of food to the hungry nestlings. Jays fiercely defend their nests. Soon after hatching, the young are ready to leave the nest and begin life on their own in the forest.
