Barry Wilkinson: Notre Dame de la Belle Verriere
Artist: Barry Wilkinson
Among the world's foremost achievements of human genius are the great cathedrals of the world. And no nation's cathedrals surpass the beauty and grandeur of French cathedrals like Notre Dame de Chartres. Chartres is well known for its architecture and sculpture ... but of all its outstanding features, its stained glass is the most magnificentt of all. This original work of art depicts Notre Dame de la Belle Verriere, Our Lady of the Beautiful Glass -- the most impressive figure window in Chartres. This window depicts an enthroned Virgin with the Christ Child on her lap, His right hand raised in blessing. The ethereal quality of the colors in this medieval glass has never been achieved since and it sis the rich and luminous sky blue of the robes set off by ruby and rose that make the window so overwhelming. Considering that the technique the glaziers used to create this great window did not allow them to see the whole window in one complete piece with daylight shining through it, they possessed an astounding sense of design and color. The stained glass windows of Chartres indeed rank as works of human genius.
