Ranging from intricate shapes to simple designs, mushrooms and other fungi are found in all parts of the earth and comprise the largest group of plant species in the world. This is due to their ability to produce a seemingly endless amount of spores -- the capsules that hold the dormant lives of the next generation of mushrooms. Fungi have always captured the curiosity of mankind for they are like no other plant in the world. Fungi do not manufacture their food as green plants do ... rather they absorb their food with the aid of special enzymes that dissolve the materials. Because mushrooms do not depend on sunlight, they are often found growing in the deep shadowy nooks of meadows and forests. Crowned with a spongy and poreous cap, the Morel mushroom is found in the mountainous regions and high plains. This cream-colored fungus grows in a tall, irregular shape with the ribbings and pits becoming more prominent as the mushroom ages. The Morel is considered a delicacy and is prized for its mild and pleasant flavor. Indeed, this delicate mushroom with its distinctive beehive pits is a delight to all.

This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood® First Day Cover for the Yugoslavia 6.10 Morel stamp issued March 21, 1983.
