The Eagle, long a symbol of strength and courageous character, has also been widely used as an emblem of power and beauty. A fitting example of these attributes is the Martial Eagle which can be found in the open mountain country of the African nation of Zimbabwe. A majestic bird, the Martial Eagle is dressed in plumage of brownish-black on its back and wings. Its breast is mostly white and mottled with flecks of brown while its head is covered with tufts of short feathers. The strongest of all African Eagles, the Martial Eagle is known for its extremely powerful feet and talons. An efficient hunter, this Eagle normally soars to great heights while its sharp eyes scan the ground below for game. However, when hunting larger animals such as monitor lizards, baboons or young impalas, the Martial Eagle frequently flies low in order to quickly dispatch its prey. Another characteristic of the Eagle is its ability to hover while riding the warm thermal air currents. In this way, the Eagle can survey a small area of its territory slowly and efficiently. It is interesting to note that the Martial Eagle reuses the same nest year after year, building a new layer each season until the nest reaches enormous proportions. Records have indicated that the nests of some Eagles have been used for over sixty years and can weigh over two thousand pounds.

This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood® First Day Cover for the Zimbabwe 21¢ Martial Eagle stamp issued October 10, 1984.
