Mark Schuler: Maria Theresia
Maria Theresia, Duchess of Liechtenstein, dispossessed of her father's holdings when she was eighteen, made a fortunate marriage which joined her family with one of the most influential families of the Hapsburg monacrchy. Maria Theresia's father, Prince Johann Adam Andreas, founder of the principality of Liechtenstein, died in 1712 without a male heir. Consequently, his large holdings, including the the newly acquired territory of the principality, his castles and palaces, numerous art collections and the government of the house of Liechtenstein, went to the Gundaker family. One year later Maria Theresia married Duke Thomas Emanuel of Savoyen-Carignano, who eventually became an imperial field marshall lieutenant. Their only child, Prince Eugen, followed in his father's footsteps. In the meantime, Maria Theresia was seeing to it that her extensive properties were so well managed and succesful that, displaying her belief in the individual, she was able to free the serfs living on her lands. In addition, she generously donated to universities and, in 1746, she founded the Savoy Knights Academy, designed to educate the children of nobility. She also promoted the Savoy Lady Foundation which still exists and is supported by the governing heads of Liechtenstein. Remembered for her benevolent interest in individuals and firm support of education, Maria Theresia lived until she was nearly 80 years old.
