Mark Schuler: Winston Churchill
For all his years, the focal point of Winston Churchill's life remained his beloved England. And the span of his active public service to her exceeded that of any modern political leader. Among the countless positions he held, Churchill served England as soldier, First Lord of the Admiralty, Member of the House of Commons, and Colonial Secretary. But it was as Prime Minister -- at the outset of World War II -- that Winston Churchill forever cemented his position as the noblest Englishman of the century. About winning the office he wrote, "At last I had the authority to give directions over the whole scene. I felt as if I were walking with Destiny and that all my past life had been but a preparation for this hour and for this trial..." Indeed, all the allied world looked to Churchill for inspiration and he gave it in full measure. A man of energy, planning, and eloquence, he gave the people morale, beckoning them onward in the face of their mighty enemy. After the hard-won victory of Germany, England turned her bulldog leader out of office for a time and Churchill devoted his immense energies to writing his masterwork, The Second World War. However, in 1951, he once again became the King's First Minister and for the next four years led England with renewed vigor. In 1964, his bulldog jaw softeneed with age, Sir Winston retired from the House of Commons to live out his days in the peace of his country home. The following year at the age of ninety, he died, but his legacy lives on.
