Mark Schuler: Robert Stolz In the cradle of the charming melodious sonatas of Mozart and the lively symphonies of Haydn, Austria's native son, composer and conductor, Robert Stolz, received his musical instruction from the Viennese masters of his day. On completing his schooling, he conducted at theaters in both Brünn and Mannheim. Then, for twelve glorious years, he stole the hearts of his countrymen with his resounding orchestration at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna. There, he led his orchestra in performing the world premiers of such delightful operettas as Oscar Straus' Chocolate Soldier and Franz Lehár's Merry Widow. The renowned conductor composed more than forty operettas and musical comedies in addition to more than two hundred songs and orchestral suites. The very best of his works include Two Hearts in Three-Quarter Time, Wild Violets, and Venus in Silk. In 1938, Robert Stolz traveled to the United States where he won the respect of Americans as he had Europeans with his melodious ballet and film scores. But, wherever he traveled, his heart belonged first and foremost to his native Austria, home of the world's great music which he loved.
