By 1863, Thomas Edward Brown had established himself as a scholar in the eyes of his countrymen. Thus far he had earned a fellowship at Oriel and subsequent ordination. Now, he was to assume the role of educator rather than student as he embarked on a teaching career at Clifton College. For the next twenty-nine years he served the college well, and as the years passed T.E. Brown's genius and eccentricities became somewhat of a legend at the college. Likewise, he was always admired by his students for his verse which he used to convey his love for his homeland. During this time Brown penned his first published poem "Betsey Lee" which appeared in Fo'c'sle Yarns in 1881. Brown went on to create many poems both lyrical and narrative and he gained great local popularity for his efforts. His most important narrative were written in Manx, the Celtic language of his homeland, the Isle of Man. Often his works displayed a daring irregularity of rhythm, but the rugged tenderness and mirth of the poet were always evident in the lines. A teacher and scholar, Brown brought a powerful sense of language to each poem. In his lyrical works this found its most pleasant expression when he yoked the emotions of happiness to sorrow to serve a philosophy of life he wished to expound. In 1897, after a long and fruitful career as a writer and teacher, T.E. Brown died. Today, the pwerful works of this native son and celebrated poet of the Isle of Man live on in the proud and rugged spirits of his countrymen.
