Mark Schuler: Saint Barnabas
Joses (Joseph) of Cyprus, born a Levite, was destined to become Saint Barnabas, a Christian Apostle and friend of Saint Paul. The name Barnabas, which means son of encouragement, was given to him by the Apostles after he sold a field and shared the money with the needy. Known for his goodness, Barnabas became a friend of Paul. When other disciples refused to believe that Paul, who had been the arch-persecutor of the Church, had become a disciple of Jesus, it was Barnabas who treated him kindly and introduced him to Church leaders in Jerusalem. Eventually, Barnabas was sent to superintend the Church in Antioch, Syria, and he chose Paul to be his assistant. Together they worked for a year in Antioch and eventually undertook a year's teaching mission together, traveling from town to town through some of the roughest terrain in the old world. Later, when they discussed retracing their steps to visit the towns in which they had preached before, they disagreed about taking the Apostle Mark with them. As a result, Paul began the journey alone and Barnabas, accompanied by Mark, returned to Cyprus where together they firmly established the Christian Church. Through his kindess and encouragement, both Paul and Mark were able to make contributions to the Christian faith, while Barnabas was responsible for adding many faithful followers. One of the oldest Christian pseudepigrapha is an epistle attributed to Barnabas. The Feast of Saint Barnabas is celebrated on June 11 each year.
