Born and raised the son of a wealthy Southern plantation owner, Wade Hampton was described as a powerful man in the physical sense -- "six feet in height, broad-shouldered, deep-chested ... with legs which, if he chose to close them in a grip, could make a horse groan in pain." During the early 1860's, this staunch Southerner served in the State Senate of South Carolina. As Civil War between the North and South became imminent, Hampton vocally supported the fact that secession from the Union was correct constitutionally, but held that "action in this direction is inexpedient and without sufficient provocation." Even though he did not favor secession, Hampton gave unstintedly of himself and of his vast resources to support the Confederacy. He even went so far as to organize, at his own expense, a small militia of cavalry, which he personally led into battle. His military service saw him through scores of battles, including such notorious ones as the battle of Manassas, the battle of Seven Pines, and even the infamous battle of Gettysburg. On each of these bloody battlefields, Hampton received serious wounds. Through the rest of his life, Wade Hampton continued to proudly fight for what he believed in.
